connecting to a MySQL database

This is so absurd, but i've come to a dead end and don't know what else to do. I'm just trying to connecto a database and the code is correct, the user has all the rights (more then required!!!, since i gave him all the rights to do whatever he wants), in localhost, in server name as in any server!!! i still can't connect? Is there any security issue that my be slipping under my bear?

i use mandriva 10.2, Mysql 4.1 and apache 2.

thanks in advance

hsa

*Try commenting the line skip-networking in the configuration file my.cnf of mysql. It is located in general in /etc or /etc/mysql.
*Restart mysql and try again.

Sorry for the late reply. I solve it and was so envolved in my work iforgot about you guys

Ok, update:

@acid_kewpie:
yes, of course mysqld is running, and i can enter in mysql from terminal and with phpMyAdmin.

@mrcheeks:
there's no problem with my my.cnf... i have that line commented from start. But thanks

Ok the thing is ... i admin my mysql from phpMyAdmin and i think it may have a bug there. I did search the phpMyAdmin home page for this but come out nothing. If i just create the user and grant him the priv's through phpMyAdmin, it wont work!!! although when i browse the database from phpmyadmin, i can see his privs properly. Only granting privs from mysql console i get it to work. Most wierd

Thanks for all you're help
