connecting to a friends windows 2000 ftp server

I'm trying to connect to a friends ftp server. He is using Windows 2000.

I am able to connect but I am unable to see anything.

I've tried KBear and gFTP for the graphical.

I tried ftp from the command line and this is the error I get when I try to type any command:

500 'EPSV': command not understood
227 Entering Passive Mode (192,168,1,200,4,94).

And that's it. I checked the settings on KBear and gFTP but don't really see anything to change on how to connect. Is there something I need to change to be able to connect to a Microsoft FTP server or does my friend need to change how I am able to connect.

I hope I provided enough info and explained myself ok. If not please let me know and I will try to be more specific.

Thanks,
Dave

Oh, if I boot with my windows harddrive i am able to connect. Go figure, can connect with MS but not with Linux.

In gFTP try going into your options and unchecking passive file transfers.

FTP > Options > FTP Tab > Passive File Transfers

hey trickykid, thanks for the reply.

I unchecked the Passive File Transfers. But I am still unable to see anything listed.

Here is what shows.

257 "/" is current directory.
PORT 66,68,219,49,4,176
200 PORT command successful.
LIST -a
150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for /bin/ls.

But I don't see his 2 directories.

Not sure if this will work or not but try changing your mode to ASCII instead of Binary. Cause now at least your not getting that one error you mentioned the first time so at least its communicating somewhat with the server.

Had to leave last night so I did not get much more time to play with it.

I was using the CLI FTP and I was able to use certain commands. I could change directories with CD and was able to see what directory I was in with PWD. But if I tried to do DIR or LS that was when I got the passive error. I also tried the FTP -A to force it not to go into passive mode.

Any idea's would be appreciated. It's nothing major. Just don't like the fact of having to boot to windows to FTP into his sight when I don't have to anywhere else. It is his first FTP setup so maybe he needs to make some changes to allow something other than Windows to FTP in.

Thanks Again,
Dave

I would get with your friend and see what kind of settings he does have on his end. If its now allowing you to use certain commands and not others, its something on the servers end most likely that isn't being recognized or something.. I've never setup a Windows FTP server.. don't think I ever will either..

I can understand that.

Well, you where right again Trickykid. With the Passive disabled and set to ASCII that did the trick (pardon the pun ).

Kind of strange that some commands work and others don't. Had not seen that.

Thanks Tricky for all the help.

Dave.
