Confused by RC.D, RC5.D etc

Can anybody point me to a documend and/or in short explain why the /etc/ structure is not that easy to grasp. There is for instance /etc/rc3.d/. Then there is a /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/ and so on.
What is the logic behind this all?

A yeah the lovely SysV style init scripts. They're not too bad really just a bunch of symlinks that get executed at the different run levels of the system. Take a look at...

each number corresponds to run level that you are in so rc3.d have links for which the programs will be started (ie S99local) or killed (ie K99local). You need to only care about rc3.d for console run level and rc5.d for gui startup (unless you wanna play with others)
It's practical in the sense that you can simply delete sym link from that dir and that particular deamon won't start ...
