I have the same mouse too, and the same system. To make your mouse wheel work with SuSE you need to configure it with sax2.

-Open sax2
-Select the option of edit the existing configuration (or so, the second option at sax2 menu)
-If your keyboard, display and other stuff works fine, just hit next till you get to the mouse section
-Once there press the button advanced
-On the new window, scroll down the menu till you reach to the section ZAxisMapping
-On that section select the option (.)buttons, and enter the numbers 4, 5, respectively on the following blank fields
-Click next till you reach the end of the menus
-Save your changes and exit
-Log off and then log on again and your middle wheel will now work (not sure if you need to restart X server)
-Presto

I tried that first and it didn't work for me. :( My mouse is a Trekker (Made in China - with Microsoft Hologram Sticker on the bottom). THe wheel refused to work. I had to make the changes in XF86Config manually. Hopefully it's a goof on my setup and not the normal course of events for SuSE71.
