computer will not boot after running a live dvd pclinux sam

Hello iam new to linux i recently put pclinux 2007 on a computer , i had bits and peaces lying around so i got it up and running ok then i found another flavour i liked called sam linux , so i booted off the dvd just got it up and running and then the computer locked up, the pointer didnt even move the bugger just frozed ,the system i have is a core2 e6420,2gig DDR2 mem, nivida 256DDR3 7900GS card ,320 sata wd,and a pioner 109DL burner,so when it frozed i just hit the reset button to try get the live dvd up and running again so i could install sam linux ,it will not boot up at all with pc2007 linux wich is already on the hard drive solely on its own,or the live dvd it will get far as the promt sreen on the dvd to select wich distro you need to run thats it.Darn thing gives me a mesage saying system halted dont sound good does it, so how can i format the hard drive to get rid of the errors with out removing the hard drive out of the box ,please can some one help me please cheers mr norm.

Quite a decent system you threw together from 'bits & pieces' but you didn't mention what the motherboard or power supply are.. Based on your provided info, it sounds like a hardware failure of some kind, like maybe the HDD controller?

Can you get into the BIOS? If so, does the BIOS show all the drives correctly?

Correction:
Hi,
Sasha you're wrong,Backtrack is not diagnostic sort of OS,it's a live cd ment to be used as such, but it has an option to install it to HD,even if developers do not recommend doing so,because it has not been tested, since it's still in beta stage, but I have done it a few times and all went well without any problems. If you remember it was the only distro I was able to install when I had problems with dying HD,so maybe it will help the OP.

Thanks Alan_ri for that correction & clarification. You are right in that yours was one of the posts that gave me that impression!

Best of luck,

Sasha

If you have your PC Linux 2007 cd can you boot from it and not the hd? Is this a sata dvd burner?

OP,what are the errors when you try to boot from a HD?
What are the options to boot from on a dvd?Was the checksum OK,if you were able to do it?
Did you try any other live cd/dvd?

There is a System rescue cd which you can check out here ,it will maybe help you format HD,but I wonder what is it that you are expecting to achieve by doing so,since it's got nothing to do with a dvd.

Stay with the ide, from some articles that I have read the sata dvdrws have some problems yet. You are right your dvd player may be the cause. Wish you luck
