There was another post about slow internet access when using Firefox and I vaguely remember something about checking proxy settings, just do a search for Firefox on this forum.

Do you mean that your computer is slower, even when you're not running firefox? What are the specifications of your computer, does it meet the minimum software and hardware requirements? Do programs like "ps" and "top" give any clues?
Just a thought.

I wasn't suggesting that you use proxying, just that you check the settings of the browser to see if proxy use is enabled.

In Mozilla Edit-->Preferences-->Advanced
In Thunderbird Edit-->Preferences-->Advanced-->Connection Settings.
