Computer freezes when I shutdown/reboot from X session

I installed Debian etch 4.0 on an older computer and after I had som einstall problems the system is running well despite only being a dual pentium pro 180Mhz system. The problem I am having now is that whenever I try to shutdown/reboot from an X session the sreen goes black and the computer freezes, this also occurs if I select console session from the login screen. I have tried KDE, and GNOME, and both of them produce the same results. Once I choose shutdown from the GUI I cannot even switch terminals. I have to manually DC power. If I am runnig X and switch to a different terminal, then run shutdown from command line the shutdown goes off without a hitch. Does anyone have any ideas. Thanks in advance

Alex

Not really, but I had similar problem with my Thinkpad T23. Xorg 6.9 Savage driver was the culprit, upgrading to 7.1 fixed it for me. Try with vesa driver, does it change anything?
