3) create a link of the folder linux-2.6.7 to /usr/src/linux
4) make menuconfig //didn't change anything
5) make bzImage
6) cp from /arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.7
7) symbolik link /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.7 /boot/vmlinuz
8) went back to /usr/src/linux and made make modules
9) make modules_install
10) cp System.map /boot/System.map1
11) cp .config /boot/config1
12) /boot/ ln -s System.map1 /boot/System.map

What I would suggest is that after you go through the configuration process (make menuconfig) you should then
Code:
make
make modules
make modules_install
make bzImage
then execute the steps to copy the new kernel, etc. The remaining steps are to add the new kernel to your lilo.conf file (in /etc), save it, then run /sbin/lilo so those changes take effect. Overall, I think you're pretty much doing the right thing, but I have always done these in a slightly different order. Good luck with it -- J.W.
