compiling sata driver for new non-running kernel

I have a problem. I have a stock redhat 8 machine with the stock kernel (2.4.18-14) and need a later kernel so that I can get my ATI Radeon 9600 working properly (need amd64_agp driver). However, my boot drive is a promise sata drive which I do have source drivers for. Somehow when I compile a new kernel, I need to add the sata driver to the kernel image so that I can actually boot into the new kernel. Are there any clear directions on how to do this posted somewhere? I can't seem to find the information. Any advice would really help! Thanks.
