Question Compiling Program

Our school is trying to replace our current temporary Windows 95 Intranet Chat server (http://vnalex.tripod.com/en/) with a more permanent and stable one (Slackware 9.0). I installed the software without much trouble, and copied the source files from the website. I ran the install per their instructions, in which a binary and start script was created. When I go to the directory where the binary is located, i type the binary file name and, it seems as though it runs, but it actually doesn't. I can't connect to the server and the application does not show up in ps -A. The instructions are as follows..

INSTALLATION

two steps:
$ make RELEASE=1 DEF_CONFFILE=/etc/ichatsrv.conf
$ make install DEF_CONFFILE=/etc/ichatsrv.conf

This will make server executable and copy it into /usr/local/sbin directory and
ichatsrv.conf to /etc directory (or, to file specified with DEF_CONFFILE).
Start script will be copied to /etc/rc.d/init.d directory.

Any help? Thanks in advance...

-Anthony

Have a look at the start script, there could also be a man page, and there are almost certainly docs with / for the software you downloaded, do you have a link?

Thanks for all your help. I read the article posted at the top of this forum for installing for newbies and that worked much better than the installation instructions they provided Thanks!

Star3132 followed the instructions in this thread to resolve hos problem, and I recomend you do the same first. If you still have problems after reading that, then please start a new thread in the software forum with a full description of the software your trying to use, where you got it from and what, if any, error messages your getting.
