compiling kernel, option xconfig

I tryed different options in 'xconfig' :

## first compilation :
-----------
> LOADABLE MODULE SUPPORT
> enable loadable module support = y
> set version info on all module symbol = y (recommended)
> kernel module loader = y
> GENERAL SETUP
> networking support = n
> NETWORKING OPTIONS
> Unix domain Socket = n
> TCP/IP networking = n
> Others ... = n
-----------
Then I got this loop when booting
> kmod : failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k binfmt-464c , errno=8
That's why I read kmod.txt and did an other compilation with those options :

## second compilation :
-----------
> LOADABLE MODULE SUPPORT
> enable loadable module support = y
> set version info on all module symbol = y (recommended)
> kernel module loader = y
> GENERAL SETUP
> networking support = y
> NETWORKING OPTIONS
> Unix domain Socket = y
> TCP/IP networking = y
> Others ... = n
-----------
Then I got the same loop : did I forgot an option ?

## third compilation :
-----------
> LOADABLE MODULE SUPPORT
> enable loadable module support = y
> set version info on all module symbol = y (recommended)
> kernel module loader = n
> GENERAL SETUP
> networking support = y
> NETWORKING OPTIONS
> Unix domain Socket = y
> TCP/IP networking = y
> Others ... = n
-----------
I got a kernel panic this time:
> (...)
> NET4: Unix domain sockets 1.0/SMP for linux NET 4.0
> VFS: mounted root
> Freeing kernel mem ...
> Kernel manic : No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel

What are the good options in 'xconfig' ?

Can you give us details of the rest of the steps your performing when compiling your kernel, it might not be what's causing the problems with your configurations and options your choosing.

Also the kernel howto at www.tldp.org might be of some help as well.

It should be correct :
cd /usr/src/linux
emacs Makefile ...extra version number...
make xconfig
make dep
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
make install
emacs /etc/lilo.conf ...
lilo

1) The 'kernel panic : No init found' must be because I
did not do 'mkinitrd'. Do I have to do that ?
I've done this and got an french error message,
something like :
-------
Mount : loop peripheral (périqhérique de boucle) not found
according to /proc/device, this kernel doesn't know
anything about the loop peripheral
If it's the case, recompile or do ismod loop.o
------

2) should I have the option 'kernel module loader = y' ?
In that case, could you help me, reading my first post?

Another error message after recompiling with
different options (including the remote of
second exteded fs support since I'm in ext2) :

--------
FAT : did not find valid FSINFO
Found sifnature1 0x0 signature2 0x0 sector = 1
Kernel panic : VFS Unable to mount root fs on 03:01
--------

Is it a frequent message ?
