compiling c in linux

I am using SuSe 10.0 Linux and am trying to compile simple c code (a hello world program) and am having difficulties.

I made the program in a text editor and am trying to compile it in the terminal app.

My previous thread somone said to download the developers kit, I downloaded the c/c++ developers package and the gnome developers package and still have yet to get my source compiled.

right now im using: gcc -o test test.c

and the teminal says that gcc is not a reconized command, is there any other ways to compile the code? or how can I get gcc to work?

Thanks.

You need to install gcc. THe easiest way with Suse, is to run Yast2, select the Software Manager, and type gcc in the search window. Select the gcc version (ex: gcc-4.0.1-5), and press install. It will ask for the appropriate installation cd and configure it for you. Then you can compile your code, no problem.

The developer kits are mainly for application development. When you start getting the hang of making small programs (hello world is the time honored beginning point), then you can move into Integrated Development Environments, like kdevelop or what ever gnome currently offers (I'm a kde guy).

Learning to program in Linux is not as difficult as it seams at first. Once you have the tools you need, it gets easier. My 15 year old is now writing his own game, and he started with a program that will report the day of the week for any month/day/year entered. Kind of cool.
