compile or modules?

Out of curiosity, do you guys prefer compiling kernel options in or just compiling them as modules?

I prefer compiling in as much as I can, the only things I use modules for are the netfilters, and the nvidia kernel driver, where I have no option.

personally i find it more reassuring to keep external hardware as modules. Not a huge benefit, but having my NIC driver, sound driver etc... kept seperate seems nicer to me, and makes me feel more in control of that hardware as i can always just stop runnign that module easily, and know it is instantly gone.

I've been flip-flopping every time I compile a new kernel. I had rules like "If you can pull a component out physically, compile its driver as a module," "if it's reasonably permanent, compile it in" etc. My last kernel I compiled everything in.

Are there any speed/security issues with modules vs compile in?
