compile kernel for athlon, but boots as i686 ?

using make xconfig on an athlon XP2000, kernel options are set for K7 as confirmed below:

# Processor type and features
CONFIG_MK7=y

( full processor section of kernel config at http://128.111.83.139/bp/kernel_config.txt )

however the login says:
kernel 2.4.22 on on i686

i can't find anything on this, can anybody hazard a guess what's happening? i know i'm configuring and compiling the kernel that is booting since the patch i added is now working.

??? thanks if anything on this, i'm brand-new to kernel compiling. i haven't even figured out where else to look for the problem source. - bp
