Combining .mp4 videos

After doing much searching I was today able to use mplayer (and mencode) to combine sections of .avi files I had laying around, which makes organization much easier.

However, I've found that unlike standard .mpg files one cannot simply cat .mp4 files together successfully. The new filesize will be correct of course but the start/end headers/footers will still be in place and the video will terminate at the cessation of the first segment.

Has anyone found a reliable and lossless solution for combining .mp4 files?

Avidemux2, get a recent version. Make sure it's compiled with mp4 support, better yet, compile it yourself, get source from svn.
