I have a quick one for all of you out there. I'm stumped on one command possibility.
If I am in a terminal, what ever form it may be in and I am in a desktop environment, is there a command I can issue from the CLI to minimize the actual terminal window instead of clicking on the 'minimize' button in the upper corner? I'm just curious on this and wonder if it is possible.
I'll laugh myself silly when someone explains how and it is more than obvious.
Thanks for the thoughts, ideas and taking the time to read this thread.
Well, there are probably commands available through dcop, dbus, or x you could issue, but it probably wouldn't be trivial. At the very least you'd have to determine exactly which window you need to control first, because the shell inside doesn't have any direct relationship with the window containing it. You'd be better off just using a hotkey combination, as set through your window manager, for that.
Thanks for your response! You are probably correct in the fact that it wouldn't be a trivial thing. Probably very complicated. I'll just stick to clicking the minimize button!
If you are with your hands on your keyboard, what's wrong with using a keybinding as David the H. very well said? It will be a tad faster than both using a command and clicking a button on your title bar.
There are ways to control *some* wm's via the command line. kwin 3.x can be controlled via dcop. I have no experience with kwin 4.x, but it should be possible to control it using dbus. Fvwm has a command line proxy that can be used to control the wm from any regular shell. But it's not a normal way to do the things. A keybinding is just shorter, faster and easier to type.
