Red face clean install, but three selection in the grub

Actually I have 2 partition in my harddisk. The first one i put in Win XP, and the other one, I put in redhat 9. When the computer start, there is a The grub for me to choose which os do I want. But there are 4 for me to choose linux ..., linux-smp..., linux..... ,and dos. The dos want is for the winXP I know, but why is there 3 linux for me to choose,

Another case is that, i have another computer, and there is no partition in it. First i install linux redhat 9, than there is some problem, and i format it again and install again. After the clean install the GRUB now have 2 selection. I think I have did a very clean install. So I format it again and do it the third time, and now the grib has three selection. So if next time i did it again, it will just be more and more.

Thanks

those 3 linux options are for redhat 9, one's the normal boot, one is for if you have more than one processor (smp) and the other is most likely a "fail-safe" boot, similar to windows' "safe mode", of course as you say the 4th is windows XP, do a "man grub" and find out about all this and then take a look at it's config file to see what you have set up.

Something similar happened to me. i installed RedHat Linux and then reinstalled it,. i had two options at GRUB, Red Hat Linux and DOS. so that was alright up to then. but then i changed the name of the Home folder in Linux, the one with your name, the apostrophe s and then Home (i.e. john's Home). it wouldnt let me rename it back, with the apostrophe s, but it let me name it anything else. that was strange. after that happened, a second Linux option showed up on the GRUB boot loader. i dont know what happened, or what caused what in the system to change.

I think, the additional options in the bootloader are displayed when one goes for an 'everything' install....I dont know if this is right, but I have read this somewhere in LQ itself...dont remember though...

Anyways...whatever may be the case, if any one can throw more light on - in which case are these extra options displayed in grub.

I also have Red Hat 9, but I didnt go for a complete install....so I can't say anything 'bout that...Would appreciate any pointers regarding the above problem...

Thanx and Regards,

amit
