circular dependency

not sure if one person holdign his own manes mean he's in a circle.. but...

[root@trevor RPMS]# rpm -Uv perl-base-5.601-6mdk.i586.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
perl-base = 5.600-30mdk is needed by perl-5.600-30mdk

should i just --force it?

------------------------------

AHH PANTS! it's not circular is it...ahh rpm said it was and i forgot to pay attention!

isajera 11-28-2001 11:29 PM

lol... it's always fun to see the guru kicking himself in his arse.

...this is why i avoid rpms.

like my new sig? it was either this, or "carpe aptenodytes!"

dorward 11-29-2001 12:16 AM

You are trying to install a new perl-base, however the currenct version of perl you have installed requires the current version of perl-base you have installed.

So...

Code:

rpm -Uvh perl-base-5.601-6mdk.i586.rpm perl-5.601-6mdk.i586.rpm

Not an answer, bit if you don't mind capping .mdk's there's another way, you could use perl cpan shell ("perl -MCPAN -e shell"). A way of upgrading Perl fit for guru's only :-]

dorward 11-29-2001 01:39 AM

Mixing packaging systems.... ouch! The pain! It burns!

Aussie 11-29-2001 04:47 AM

[start mysterious voice] Use the source luke..........[/end mysterious voice]

acid_kewpie 11-29-2001 05:36 AM

thanks for the answer dorward, i wasn't actually asking the question tho! :-)

ahh i would use sources but i'm basically manually upgrading md80 to md81, and ended up simultaenously upgrading about 30 rpms in one command to nuke all the dependencies. all to get rpmdrake / urpmi working nicely...

but then i'd assume that packages like rpmdrake don't come in source ever... so i'd need the rpm dependencies beneath it to get it working properly.

ok.. so i check my mail this morning, and see that someone had actaully bothered to reply to a post that specifically said i was wrong and it didn't matter after all... i guessed correctly who it would be. still think she fancies me ;-)

btw, i still heavily refute the guru status.

Aussie 11-29-2001 05:51 AM

You can be a Guru --nodep.......heh,heh,heh.

Sorry, bit late on the uptake there,
carpe aptenodytes = 'seize the large penguins'.
Very good, very good!

Now, which company do we think should have this: Caveat aptenodytes, or am I mixing my languages?

Aussie 11-30-2001 09:25 AM

All you redhatters and drakers can just back off and leave the field to the the slackers to whom you should all bow down before......and I'll have a lager while your at the bar...........[hic]
