Checking software versions

I am curious how one might check the version of a piece of software of even a library, by issuing a console command. Is there a way?

Yes, you can. Many programs have --version switch that shows the version. If you're using an RPM based system, you can use 'rpm -aq|grep programname' . You'll see full package name. Version number is a part of it.
