checking memory usage from command line
 
Is there a command to check how much physical memory you're using, without a GUI?

I need to compare how much memory the X "failsafe terminal" uses, compared to X with KDE.

You would use the command "free".

To see your memory useage in MBs:

there a re a few switches. man free will tell you more

top

will tell you what processes are running as well
