Check version of program from urpmi

Is there a way to check the version of a program, from urpmi, before installing it? That is, is there some type of command that you can type in, on console, with urpmi and the program name to find out the version of it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I understad your question right, you wish to determine the ersion of a previously/already installed software. That is you are looking for an alternative of the rpm -q packagename command.

is this so? Why not just use the
rpm -q packagename

Hmm, not exactly. For example, I type in "urpmi mplay"; I get the following list:

kmplayer
mplayer
mplayer-fonts
mplayer-gui
mplayer-skins
mplayerplugin
xmms-mplayer

Now, say, on the first line there -- "kmplayer" -- is there a way to check what version kmplayer (whatever that is ) it is, before I download & install it?

You can use the "install software" GUI tool that mandrake provides, or you can dump urpmi altogether and install apt/synaptic to manage packages, as per my post in http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=222612

(Synaptic is much better, since it combines the add software/remove software/mandrake upgrade tools all in one.)
