Cheap mp3 serving across the house?

I was wondering if anyone had a HOW-TO a FAQ or a good place to learn about solving my little dillemma. Okay, so here's the deal, my computer is in my room and that's where (duh) all the music I listen to is. But I do the majority of my homework in a quasi-living room on the other side of the house. I hate burning CDs since I'm poor at organizing and they always get fubar'd because of it. But, hopefully, I should be getting another computer shortly (a very crappy public school computer it has ethernet and a soundcard, so this is where I got my idea), is it feasible, if I network the computer onto my homenetwork, that I would be able to set some sort of mp3 player on computer #2, to stream the mp3's off of computer #1, according to playlists, or whatever is in my current (ie not saved) XMMS playlist on computer #1? I'm asking this here, since I would undoubtably be installing Linux, so I'm on the hunt for such programs that would help me out. I figure it doesn't need that nice of a computer since it would just be playing music, so I could just put it next to the TV and have an okay little Stereo so I can listen to my music whilst I do homework. Anyone have a similar set-up or know of any links that might be of service?

um, you babble alot in that, but from what I can understand, it sounds like all you need is a NFS server and a MP3 player that runs off a playlist.

This is how Samba works for filesharing.
You can put the files into a folder that is shared to the network, and use the MP3 player to open files from the shared folder, without actually having to copy data music to the other computer,.

Another thing that you could do is setup a Shoutcast server on one and just stream it. It would probably be a better idea to just share out a directory with all of your songs with NFS or Samba.

If just making the files available on the second PC using NFS is too dull and boring there's an impressive list of linux network audio tools at

http://linux-sound.org/netaudio.html

I think they missed one, which is to set up an mp3 player as 'printer' on the second PC and 'print' mp3 files to it from other machines. Here's more detail on that one...
