character encoding issue

hello, on a recently installed system my terminal output occasionally produces binary gibberish, I beleive this has to do with the character encoding scheme I'm using/not using. the terminal I'm using is xterm over ssh, however I get the same effect when I'm locally logged in. Could someone please inform me of how to find out whats wrong with me encoding and how to fix it, any information will help, many thanx,Gearoid
