changing the screen res outside X

Hello, I am running Mandrake 8.2, using an older monitor, that doesn't really like the 800x600 screen resolution; which is the 'default' kernel/boot up resolution. Anyways, I just wanted to know how I could change this resolution to 640x480 while I am *not* in X. I would also like to know if I could make 640x480 the new 'default' resolution (so I won't have to change it back every time I boot Linux). Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

you can run the command xf86config as root while your not in an X session. You'll be able to set your monitors vertical and horizontal sync rates as well as setting your default resolutions and color depths. :)
