Question Changing the default file type icons in gnome on fedora C3

Hi All,

I am still a newbie to Linux but I am doing my best to learn about Linux so I can finally say bye to M$. The only problem is every now and again I come up with a small silly problem I just can't get around..

I am currently trying to make my home system easier for my partner to use as well as keeping it functional and she is of course more experienced with M$. I have skiníd gnome for her to look clean cut like a Mac which she loves, but I canít for the life of me find a way to change the file type icon used for default apps. i.e The skin I have used currently makes word and openoffice writer document icons look like folders when opened in a normal window - all I want to do is change the icon used for these types of file to another icon (I do not want to change the application used to open the file) so when she opens her home directory she will not see tones and tones of the same icons... I want to have word and openoffice displaying nice (w) iconís I have already downloaded and I want folders to appear as folders. All I really want to do is change the default iconís for different file types without changing the app used to open them.

I am using fedora core 3 with gnome and I canít find any easy way to do this. If there is a simple app to let me change default file icon types in gnome please can you let me know the command to run it from a shell just in case I canít find it.

Many thanks for any help

you want to use the gnome themes dialog in settings or prefrences in the menu.

Found it!

Hi mrGenixus,

Thanks for your post, The problem was the theme I had choosen didn't have icons for the file types in question. All I had to do was create the icons I wanted - with the correct name i.e gnome-mime-application-vnd.ms-word.png and place them in the theme mimetypes folder - all done tested and now working. I guess this also answers the question of adding new filetypes - the one thing I want to do now is find out how to change them system wide for all users and any new created users. Still we learn something new everyday... I think in the next version of Gnome and KDE they should put in a mimetype manager to make things that little bit easier.

Thanks again for your reply...

two part answer here:

as far as changing the global icons: for both gnome and kde? um, that's gonna be kinda hard. You might find some information at either of their sites, or by looking fo where files are.

as far as a mime-type editor, i'd wait for them to both conform to the freedesktop standard first.
