Changing Screen Resolution Crashes X

Hi all,
I recently installed Gentoo Linux and it was working just peachy, until i tried to alter the screen resolution (KDE 3.1.5).... first I did it as root, I killed X and then logged in as my regular user and did the same, after giving root permissions to my regular user i changed the res and killed x, when I went to restart X i got an error (i'm at school now so i can;t give you the error message).... so after a few hours of messing with it I umerged X and remerged it. now the funny part.... when I reemerged X, iy worked, but i could only see the mouse pointer... the rest is dark. so i tried to configure X for my video card.... again, error messages like crazy....

please someone help,

i do not want to have to start over from scratch

Shane

well, did you check out before changing the resolution, that there are more than one resolution options in your XF86Config ? If not, then X might not be able to change :)

Well, just go through you XFree's config (/etc/X11/XF86Config usually) and see what there are. run the configuration tool (xf86config?) and answer it's questions...and you should be fine :) you only need the right numbers (frequencies etc.) and few minutes time.
