changing keyboard layout

I tried using yast, but it doesn't work. Anything I change in the keyboard layout section doesn't have any effect on my keyboard. I want to be able to use special characters without having to open the special characters box, or typing alt+code...
Do I need to install anything? Is there anything I can do?

Solution for other noobs line me: After changing configuration, close and reopen session...

Question: Is there a way I can change my layout without having to restart the session every time?
Because I need both romanian and english keyboard, because both lack some special characters I need...

Second solution to other noobs like me :
Control Center- Regional&accessibility - Keyboard layout.
Then it's simple. And you don't have to always restart the session.
