changing font out of X windows ... ?

Hi. How do I change the font style in just plain old Linux not being in X, just at the good ol' black screen?

Also I edited lilo.conf to change the vesa framebuffer to 800x600x64k by uncommenting that line so that I could get a bigger font size and when Linux boots it says something like ..... hmmm can't remember ..... but It offers me all these different video modes cause the one(s) im uncommenting are unnacceptable.

Can anyone help?
Basically my font is WAY too tiny when Linux first boots and i want it larger ... more like the size of DOS fonts in DOS.

thanks
