It is my understanding that Linux uses this naming practice to name the IDE devices:
hda - First IDE device (Usually primary hard disk)
hdb - Second IDE device
hdc - Third Device
hd.. - And so on to hdz ( If this really can happen I'm not sure.)
Your CD-ROM is probably hdb if you only have one hard disk.
So try mounting /dev/hdb
This probably a flaw in RedHat 7.2's detection mechanism.
I know your pain. I am having the same problem and it is not because I don't know where my CDROM is connected or how redhat designates the devices. The CDROM is detected when I do the install but it goes away forever when I boot for the first time. Redhat 5.2 through 7.1 install and detect the drive just fine but 7.2 freaks out. It seems to detect it because if I list the contents of /proc/ide/hdb/model it tells me that I have an NEC CD-ROM Drive:273 (which is correct). However /proc/ide/hdb/driver just say (none). I thought it might have something to do with a DMA problem but I disabled DMA for the device and it didn't help. You might try adding the line:
/sbin/hdparm -d0 /dev/hdc
to your /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit file. This is supposed to disable the DMA for the device. I read somewhere that this might help for some CDROMs (it didn't help me though). Good luck.
I got nowhere with depmod -ae or any of the other fixes on the RedHat website. But moving my cdrom from the master on the 2nd IDE channel (dev/hdc) to the slave on the 1st channel (dev/hdb) did the trick.
When I try to install Linux 7.2 I get the message that
my primary harddrive is hdc and my secondary harddrive is
hdf, whats going on here. Do I need change the physical
harddrive configuration. Doe'nt seem to recognize my CDROM
drive either trying to boot the Linux 7.2 installation CD.
