cdrom access problem in debian woody

having problems mounting /cdrom. the cdrom is linked to hdc, reading dmesg problems popup with hdc as follows:
hdc: command error: error=0x51
end request: I/O error, dev 16:00(hdc) sector 0
ATAPI device hdc: error illegal request --(sense key=0x05)
the same message continues for a while.
hdc does not appear in /etc/fstab, the entries for cdrom in fstab are:
/dev/cdrom /cdrom iso 9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0

the cmd mount /dev/cdrom or /cdrom should do it but its not.
any ideas to correct this problem much appreciated, thanks.

I think that your problem is probably a hardware problem. Check the hardware. Is the CD-ROM jumpered as master? Is it on the correct cable plug? Does the cable have the correct number of wires? Is the BIOS set up correctly for /dev/hdc?

thanks jailbait, it turned out to be a permissions problem, i didn't belong to the 'disk' group.
changed to include myself and that works, however, now i have a similar problem withe sound server
/dev/dsp. it fails to initialize-permission denied. checked the perms. on it, showed root and audio as owners, so i included myself in the audio group but to no avail, it still will not initialize and defaults to the null server. will have to hunt for the group that controls /dev/dsp.
any thoughts on this problem? ole woody has installed weird. no xserver, fixed that, then the cdrom and now this.
