Installation was just fine (and I even "tried out" dual-boot installation with Vista to be sure it would work). I have since re-installed, allowing Ubunto to take the entire drive (eliminating Vista).

Issues:

Wifi - I gave up on the included wireless and madwifi, and resorted instead to ndis wrapper and the windows driver.

NVidia: Envy did a good job of installing the Nvidia driver. However, I manually selected the latest driver instead of allowing Envy to do it automatically. Envy can be installed via Synaptic.

Sound: Is choppy and distorted. I have NOT found a solution for that.

BIOS: You might want to visit the BIOS and look for the fan setting. From the manufacturer, the fan is set to run all the time. I am not sure it has to! (and this laptop sucks battery quickly)

I have to recommend some tips that some pretty nice individual prepared:

Look for ubuntutip on googlepages

These helped me a lot.

I just bought this laptop today. I have been trying to install Ubuntu 8.04 64bit. Is there a reason you did 32 bit? How did you do it?

It's just that I'm more confident with 32 on a 'new' machine. After all, there's only 2GB RAM anyway.

So, some advice. First, don't get frustrated with the wifi. The switch ALWAYS is red -- even if the wireless card is on. I used NDIS Wrapper and the Windows driver. Toggling the wifi switch DOES seem to turn it on and off.

Next, I have discovered an odd thing about Nvidia. I've written to Nvidia for their recommendation for drivers. The 173 driver I'm using just might NOT be right.

Here's what I'm talking about.

Two options are offered on Nvidia.com

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us allows you to
select either GeForce or GeForce M/Go

Selecting GeForce 8 series takes you to
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d...173.14.12.html

Selecting GeForce M series takes you to
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d...32_169.12.html

I understand that Nvidia produces the video card as well as mainboard for many laptops.
This machine seems to be one.

I am having the same problem here.

I was so excited to get home and do a simple dual boot so I could run Windows and Linux. Well, that turned out to be a not so simple feat.
None of my cd's or hard drives are recognized by...what...each other? the computer? I was unable to install Vector, Ubuntu,Tiny Me, even DSL refused. I was finally able to get the latest Puppy release on it's own partition, but sound and internet are no shows. I thought I was coming along quite nicely learning this fascinating world of Linux...uhhhm...guess it's back to the drawing board. would appreciate any and all help!
Thanks
