CD burning program

When I used Mandriva, the k3b cd burning program worked fine. Now I have Fedora Core5. It doesn't have the k3b program. It seems k3b is only for KDE interface.

Please suggest me a good working cd burner program for Fedora. It seems Fedoara Core5 doesn't have a cd burning program. There is a CD/DVD creator icon. It is not good program like k3b.

The k3b has all the functions.

Your suggestions are welcome.

I guess you have already discovered that CD burning is built in to Nautilus/Gnome. For example, I really like to be able to right-click on an .iso file and select "burn to CD."
I have not found any tasks that Nautilus won't do, but you CAN install k3b on Fedora/Gnome. You will simply need to to install a bunch of KDE libraries.

There is also something called XCDroast (or similar) but I have not used it.

gnomebaker, x-cd-roast, graveman are gtk2 apps for burning. You could just simply use the command line tools - cdrecord, dvdrecord, mkisofs, growisofs. Most GUI burning apps are just frontends to the CLI apps anyway.

There is a icon called 'CD/DVD creator.
It is Nautilus 2.14.0

Is this the one you have?

It was a hell for me to install KDE for Fedora. It complained endlessly about dependencies. I gave it up.

My work system is RHEL4 with Nautilus 2.8---RHEL is the only Linux that is officially supported here, and it is very conservative--bordering on retarded.

In my Nautilus, there is simply a menu entry for the "CD Creator"

Personally, I am moving away from Gnome and RedHat. There are numerous systems now which do a much better job of package management and dependencies---eg all the Debian-based systems, Arch Linux, PCLinuxOS etc.

Just for kicks, I'm going to try installing k3b on Arch.....

k3b installs on Arch very easily.
There is nothing in the Linux world like a good package manager......

Go to the Fedora site and find the index of the repositories--k3b may be in there.

If you like k3b, keep using k3b. You could've installed it when you installed FC5 (it's an available option). However if you want it now just:
Code:
yum install k3b.i386
This assumes you're running 32-bit x86.

I want k3b. I am familiar with it because I have been using it for over one year. But it is not for GNOME. It is for KDE.

I don't have KDE. I like KDE. It was hell to install KDE.

Is the file you mentioned for GNOME?
Please tell me.

I am running 64bit version of Fedora Core5.

You could've installed KDE with YUM as well. k3b is built for KDE but it should work with Gnome as well (though it will probably be slower to load under Gnome).

Are you familiar with using YUM? If not I suggest you take 30 minutes and learn how to use it. Search on Google or this forum and I'm sure you'll find a good HOW-TO; but it's truly quite simple.

Thanks fudam

I know nothing about yum. I read somewhere that k3b is not for GNOME.
Is it true?

I've just installed K3b on Ubuntu which uses Gnome for its desktop.

It works without any problems and I don't notice it being any slower than when I used it on Slackware.

I installed it using the Ubuntu repositories and iot installed all the relevant dependancies. I haven't got KDE installed as far as I'm aware, I've certainly not installed it as a package and I used the default installation of Ubuntu.

It may be a different distro to yours, but presumably the same situation would apply.

As suggested by fudam I downloaded all the stuff from the fedora forum.
http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=25880

There were 319 files and took about 3 hours to download.
I can't find them on my system.

How can I find them? How can I install them?

[root@c83-250-99-43 Nissanka]# yum install any-package
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up Install Process
Setting up repositories
core [1/3]
extras [2/3]
updates [3/3]
Reading repository metadata in from local files
Parsing package install arguments
No Match for argument: any-package
Nothing to do
[root@c83-250-99-43 Nissanka]# ls

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I downloaded as a root user. I downloade here.
[root@c83-250-99-43 Nissanka]# pwd
/home/Nissanka
[root@c83-250-99-43 Nissanka]#
It should be here. The 'ls' command doesn't show them.

Where are those 319 files?

PLEASE--do not post endless lists of stuff. Your question gets lost in the details.

Did you download some .rpm packages? Or were you using the package manager?

You can search on the name of one of the files to see where they all went--or look in you browser preferences to see where it puts downloads.

Is this the general form of commands you used to try and install?:
Code:
[root@c83-250-99-43 Nissanka]# yum install any-package
<snip>
No Match for argument: any-package
Nothing to do
Note that you would need to be in the directory with the .rpm package for this to work. Otherwise, you need to give the full path. like so:
rpm -i /home/Nissanka/Desktop/<name>.rpm

(And why "yum" and not "rpm"?)
