case sensitive groupadd?

Maiby this question is to stupid to be asked but we encountered something strange after upgrading to RH 9.0.

Suddenly groupadd refuses groupnames with uppercase characters, previous versions of RH didn't complain.

As a test we replaced the new groupadd and useradd files
with those from RH 8., and uppercase characters where
accepted again.

We did probably something wrong but can't recognize it ...

Best regards and thanks in advance
