Question can't start x server

Hi,

My knowledge of linux/x windows is limite so I apologise if I get anything wrong.

I am running dual boot WinME and Red Hat 7.1. It has been working fine for a year or so. I recntley went to start linux for the first time in quite a while and got the following problem:

After login I get a screen allowing me to select a display manager (I think this is a feature added to the version I've got by my university) with various choices GNOME, KDE etc or a console login. After choosing any of the display managers (or startx after doing a console login) the screen goes blank and stays blank although a signal is reaching the monitor because I have a green light. I cannot do anything else and have to reset.

The only thing I have changed on my machine recently is that I installeda Gefroce 4 graphics card (previously had onboard graphics) but removed it again after a day or so because it kept on causing my WinME to crash. I never started linux during the time I had the gfx card in and the BIOS settings are all the same as before now I am back on onboard gfx.

Someone suggested to me that I just needed to re-configure X so I tried this using Xconfigurator but it kept throwing an error to do with permissions on sysconfig/mouse or something. I managed to reconfigure using xf86config but now when I try and start x I get the error below and it returns me to the login screen.

I think I may have made the problem worse because I did not back up the old x settings (I know i'm an idiot!)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. (would installing a new XFree86 be of any help?)

Thanks

my error message:

Just a guess.

This may be a problem where your graphics card does not have enough memory. Does your onboard gfx "borrow" main memory. If so, when you went back to the onboard gfx did it get as much memory as it originally had? Or, more importantly, does it have enough memory to support the screensize and color depth that you specified in x86config?
