Can't login in X as a normal user but root

i can login as root but cannot login as a normal user in X window.
when i try to login as a normal user the screen simply flashes and the login screen comes back.
But i can login in the bash as a normal user.
i'm using debian sarge.
can anyone help me?

what error messages are in the x log ?

logs are usually in /var/log/

im not sure what X you are using Xorg or Xfree86. this doesnt matter much, just alter the name of the log file you read.

i have just found the solution.
i have no disk space on my linux partition so i con't login as a normal user,
after freeing some space, everything runs well.
thank u for your help...
