Exclamation Can't change the display settings for X!

I just installed Mandrake 8.1 on my computer, but i can only get a resolution of 640 by 480. the other display modes give a garbled screen on my monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 3 on a SiS 630 display adapter). Is there any way around this? I can only see the top half of most of the application windows.
