Cannot shrink ntfs beyond 56GB

I want to install linux on a PC with a 75GB hard drive which is running Windows XP.
I have tried deactivating swap and defragementing the disc but there is a block of disc being used way out at the 56GB mark well away from rest of the used disc. I have booted into the MEPIS live disc and Qparted will not shrink the partition beyond 56MB.

Is there any way of shifting that block of hard disc usage? Do I need to buy something like Partition Manager?

Not sure this would work though. Could you try to shrink the partition as much as you can and then try and defrag/shrink again. It has worked for me once !
There are several commercial defraggers available in the market which are capable of moving thses immovable system files ! I can remember DiskKeeper and OODefrag. Check these too over the net, maybe, you can even download trial version to get your job done.
