Can not Ping Another PC (win2000) on LAN !!
( post #1)

Hi

From some strange resons i can not ping my Wwwserver pc on LAN with 2 machines one Linux Mandrake 9 and 2nd Win2K. In /etc/hosts i got:
127.0.0.1 localhost
only one entry, Is that corect? I read few thread about similar issue and that file had many entries each one for seperate Machin on LAN. Shoul I munualy enter the 2nd pc IP there? or shoul my Linux Mach. enter the entry by itself or should it broadcat the LAN for the IP ?

Help could be usefull from you .

Hi zick, I don't want to be rude, but please try to post your question in only one forum, don't post the same question on different forums as this will confuse people and also make hard for you to track the answers to your post. Thank you.

I don't want to be rude but are u the owner of the Forum?

No, I'm just trying to help you. Following this rule you will avoid a moderator closing your post, but then again I was just making a "suggestion", like you said I don't own the forum.. If you want go ahead and post your question in all the forums.

Now you sound like Dud. Cool

So do you have any suggestions why I can not ping Winw2000 from my Linux box? Mand 9?

boreo 09-28-2003 11:31 PM

Can you ping Mandy from Win2000?.. And about the 127.0.0.1 I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to say about this, 127.0.0.1 is the loopback address for every machine. When you are connected to a network you assign a private ip like 192.168.1.2 to the machine, you can either set an static IP or let the computer get the IP from DHCP.. You usually set an static IP to the gateway, you wouldn't want this IP to be changing all the time. Now if you can ping Mandy from Win2000 can you tell us your

ipconfig /all :::for win2000 and your

ifconfig ::::for Mandy

And also tell us how is your network connected.

2 pcs, 1 Mandrake and another one Ms Win2000 server all of them are behind firewall Linksus external router. It is Ethernet LAN with cat 5 cable.

Any idea why this time I can not ping my LAN pc but can PING for ex. www.yahoo.com ??

Thanks to all
