cannot find kernal image

I have just re-installed Red Hat 8 on my new computer which currenlty has XP on a seperate hard disk. I decided not to install a boot loader as i have had many problems with this in the past and would just boot from a floppy each time i needed. But on boot, i get an error message saying "cannot find kernal image" and just leaves me at a boot: prompt. Is there a way around this?

What kind of boot disk is it? Is it a grub disk? Tell me more and I'll tell you how to boot the system. Also, it is pretty easy to get grub to boot XP and it'll be a lot easier to get into linux that way as well, so if you wish we can certainly help you get that working.

Thanks for getting back so quickly.

It's just a normal boot disk (floppy) i made when prompted to do so after installation of Red Hat 8. I've never been able to get grub to work, and always, on boot just get GRUB in the top corner of the screen and neither OS will boot. Would love to get it working though if poss.
If it helps here is my spec:
gigabyte 8ipe1000pro motherboard (intel 865pe)
1024mb 2100 ram
40gb hd on ide 0 master - linux installed
120gb serial ata hd ide 3 (currently disconnected (holding xp) as red hat 8 won't install without new kernal, a job i will do after installation)
Thanks
