Cannot change password for normal user


This issue is really getting my nerve, have been scratching my hair for weeks, but still dont know what causing the error :

passwd: Authentication token manipulation error

This happend when use trying to change their password thru this command : passwd

but there is no error when changing using root.

OK, you've been at it for weeks. What have you tried that we can discount?

Are the permissions, ownership and integrity of /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow OK?

Most likely there is/are inconsistencies in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow.
