Can the Mac OS be considered a Linux based OS?

One of my friends who is a die-hard Apple user said that the Mac OS is Linux. I'm relatively new to Linux distros and am not sure what he meant or if he's right. Any thoughts would be great, thanks.

Mac OS is definitely not Linux. If anything it takes elements from BSD and hence should be more appropriately labeled as such rather than as a linux.

No it is not. OS X is unix-like underneath, but it is not Linux.

Well, Linux and Unix are closely related so there is some truth in there although it isn't really correct. Linux systems run a Linux kernel, OS X does not. Still, it's definitely more like Linux than Windows is (although MS is working hard on this, no matter what they say).

OS X runs the Mach Kernel. Closer to a BSD / Unix than Linux..

Quote:
Mach was developed as a replacement for the kernel in the BSD version of Unix, so no new operating system would have to be designed around it.
