can play cds

I can't manage to play cds. I can read data cds and all but can't play audio ones. I am running a 2.6 kernel and using udev. Here are the permissions that I can find concerning cdroms
cdrom*:root:cdrom:0660
in /etc/udev/permissions.d/50-udev.permissions
running gentoo. I get this message when I try to play as user
Quote:

bane@mymachine ~ $ dcd 0
CDROMREADTOCENTRY[4] failed: Invalid argument
and this is the output of groups
Quote:

bane@mymachine ~ $ groups
wheel audio cdrom video users

What distribution, desktop environment and cd player application are you using?

Well seeing as you are a gentoo user I am sure you would have already come across this but here goes. Do you have an audio cable going from your CD drive to your soundcard/motherboard? Because some audio playing software plays through that cable rather than through the IDE. XMMS plays through IDE I think. Sorry if this post is no help.
