Question Can not upgrade from Etch to Lenny ?

Greetings all,

I wanted to upgrade my Etch box into Lenny , I modified my sources.list as follows:

Quote:
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main contrib non-free
then when I execute "apt-get update" output is as follows:

Quote:
umanga:/etc/apt# apt-get update
Get:1 http://ftp.us.debian.org lenny Release.gpg [189B]
Hit http://ftp.us.debian.org lenny Release
Get:2 http://security.debian.org lenny/updates Release.gpg [189B]
Get:3 http://ftp.us.debian.org lenny/main Packages/DiffIndex [926B]
Get:4 http://security.debian.org lenny/updates Release [40.8kB]
Get:5 http://ftp.us.debian.org lenny/contrib Packages/DiffIndex [367B]
Get:6 http://ftp.us.debian.org lenny/non-free Packages/DiffIndex [229B]
Get:7 http://security.debian.org lenny/updates/main Packages [20.2kB]
Get:8 http://security.debian.org lenny/updates/contrib Packages [14B]
Get:9 http://security.debian.org lenny/updates/non-free Packages [14B]
Fetched 62.8kB in 2s (23.1kB/s)
Reading package lists... Done
Then I execute "apt-get dist-upgrade" and it wont do any upgrading?? Output is as

Quote:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
What could be the problem ?

Post the entire contents of /etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/apt/preferences and /etc/debian_release

Your problem is that you didn't uncomment the lenny lines and you left the etch lines uncommented. You are also Pinning stable in your preferences file; I would have to look up what 500 means but you may want to change that.

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian lenny non-free main contrib

Looking at the latest sources.list you posted, I don't believe you even need the preferences file if everything is pointed at lenny. I would just rename preferences to preference.old update and try again.
