Can Mandrake 10 be installed with 128mb memory?

I have been unable to install Mandrake 10 on my pc, (I also could not install Fedora Core 3). I believe this is because I do not have enough memory.

I also tried it in text mode, without success.

I was wondering whether anyone has successfully installed it on a pc with less the 256mb of memory?

The only distribution I have managed to install is Slackware. (also Knoppix works.)

My spec of my ageing PC is:
===================

PIII 500 with 128mb memory, 30gb HDD (my motherboard only has two memory slots and I have 2 x 64mb )

What kind of errors are you getting that prevent you from installing?

Unfortunately I can't remember the details, but I think it was early on in the process. (I did have a few goes at it)

I would try again, but I am not confident that I am likely to be successful.

Exact errors will get you better replies..

I have installed Mandrake 10 on a friend's pc with that exact amount of RAM.

I was careful to advise him to use icewm by default instead of KDE, though.

He just kept the base for KDE and some apps that needed KDE. So it is possible.

Mandrake is just as usable as any other Linux distro, provided you get rid of

unwanted bloat.

It is a fact, as trickykid mentionned, that posting the errors you had would help

a lot.

Cheers

I had Mandrake 10.0 on my PIII 600 with 128MB ram. It was quite slow using kde but it worked. then I switched to debian sarge on the same machine with gnome which felt much better. now with fluxbox it rocks! nevertheless, I upgraded to 256MB recently because I like to have a lot of applications running at the same time.

I have tried installing again, and the exact error I get is:

* trying to load /sys/root/tmp/image/install/stage2/mdkinst-stage2.bz2 as a ramdisk
* reading compressed ramdisk: IO_ERROR
* unsetting automatic

'Could not uncompress second stage ramdisk. Probable hardware error while reading the data (this maybe caused by a hardware failure or linux kernel bug)'

This presumably is nothing to do with only having 128mb or ram?
