can i resize partition without formatting?

hi all..

win me is taking 10gig and
linux&win Me shares fat32 6.5gigs

i'd like to repartition it

another partitioning question

here is a another related question...

i have linux in one big / directory
here's df
------------------------------------
[eugene@localhost eugene]$ df
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda5 3.4G 2.8G 436M 87% /
/dev/hda1 6.8G 4.4G 2.4G 64% /mnt/windows
/dev/hda7 8.1G 4.6G 3.5G 56% /mnt/d
/dev/scd0 648M 649M 0 100% /mnt/cdrom
[eugene@localhost eugene]$
-------------------------------------

i read/ if i split /usr /home /usr/local
and install programs only under /home /usr/local
i can upgrade to later linux version easily..

can i do this with repartitioning??

thank you

Partition magic only works on ext2 and linux swap file systems, not on ext3 or reiserfs, so as long as your not using one of those two you will be able to resize and create new partitions without formatting. For splitting up linux you'll need to create a partition for each one you want to live in a seperate location, going by your post you'll need to create five partitions (one each for /, /home, /usr and /usr/local) plus a linux swap partition.

thank you

aussie thank you..

so,
i resize dos partition and split up into several partitions for /home /usr /usr/local
..

there are /home /usr /usr/local in my machine even thought it doesn't have their own partitions.

i think i need to mv /home /usr /usr/local to the newly created partitions..(but how do i refer to the partitions?)
and change /etc/fstab
is this correct?

----------------
create partitions with pqmagic
reboot in linux
cp -r /home ***(<---where?)
change /etc/fstab
-----------------

thank you

Do "mv /home /dev/hda#" where '#' is the number of the new partition, eg; your '/' is on /dev/hda5 at the moment. Edit your /etc/fstab using the same options and mount points but the new dev location for each one.
