can i install debian and ubuntu on the same partition?

i had a crazy idea: ive wanted to use ubuntu for a while now but I already have debian installed on my only extra disc. is linux cool if i also install ubuntu along with my debian installation on the same hard drive and same partition? or will they have sex with each other and spawn a horrible mutant of a system that will wreak havoc on my installations--and more importantly my mbr?

i suppose i could just format and make two partitions but then id have to reinstall debian :'( (and possibly XP -- OH NOES!!)

You'd end up overwriting files if you installed Ubuntu on the same partition. Have you tried resizing the existing Debian partition from a LiveCD?

You will end up with a ubuntu only system.

I liked debian better than ubuntu. Dress debian up in a pretty skirt, and imo, you have something pretty close to ubuntu.

A defeatist attitude will get you nowhere. It's worth trying what I suggested as you may learn something from it, even if it doesn't work.
