I just installed Red Hat Linux 6.1 yesterday. It was sucessful, but I can't use X! Only the command line! Here's what happened:
First, the installation program listed my video card as unknown after it was done probing. I thought it was no big deal (how dumb of me!), and continued with the installation. The colors in the installation program were wrong too (white background insted of grey, insted of solid red, there were other colors too.) Eventually, it was all done, and I booted into linux usning a LILO bootdisk. I logged in (with the command line), and then typed startx at the prompt. It then gave me this error message:
execue failed for /ect/x11/x (errorno2)
_X11TransSockerUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
giving up
xinit: connection refused(errno 111): unable to connect to x server
xinit: No such process(errno3): server error.
I simply CANNOT use X! I'm guessing that something is up with the video card. Maybe I have to get a newer version of Linux because 6.1 might be too old! I really hope not!
I'm suprised I can use the command line, though. It went better than what I had hoped for. ANY HELP THAT CAN BE PROVIDED IS GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks for reading!
i believe this is something in the XF86Config file (or XF86Config-4 file). try running Xconfigurator again - that fixed my problem (then again, probing found a suitable video card). if you know the information about your particular video card, you can just modify the XF86Config file yourself.
you might then want to check out www.xfree86.org website for hardware support for your video card. also, i think jharris wanted to know the brand and model, not just the chipset. if you give us the model, we might be inclined to know off the top of our heads if it is supported with by xfree86 or not.
(psst tricky, if that's the case... please let me know how to get accelerated graphics working on my linux box with an integrated ATI Rage Pro (AGP 2X) graphics card see the recent openGL thread for more info)
I guess it's embedded. I just found out! Ahhhhh!!! IS THERE ANY POSSIBLE WAY TO GET IT WORKING WITH LINUX??? I'M GONNA GO CRAZY!!! I GOTTA GET LINUX!!! I put so much of my time and effort in it, not to mention the money! Thanks for any help. If there is no way to get it working, then do you know of any cheap video cards that work with both Linux AND Windows?
Intel 810 vid cards may not have been supported at the time of 6.1 or 6.2 releases, they are generally supported across the board now...
even still make sure you did install xsvga server as a lot of times linux can just use a generic chipset to get it running...ive also noticed that redhat is buggy when it comes to x... suse7.2 is only 29$, has a shitload of apps and will definitely work with 810's-- you may want to consider it... from what ive seen so far suse is the best when it comes to easy graphical x configurating (SAX)...
