I have Fedora core installed on a partition on my hard disk. I just installed XP on another partition. Now when I start up my computer it goes straight into XP. I don't even get an option to load up Fadora. What am I doing wrong, and how do I fix it?
I guess Windows XP will overwrite your MBR and maybe even your Linux-partition(s)? You should install XP first, and then LINUX.
If your Linux partition is still there you should be able to access it by installing a boot manager.
I'm using almost the same setup as you do, but with two harddisks. I usually use one harddisk for each OS, and always install the OS's bootloader on its own disk. Then you just choose in BIOS which HD to boot from.
XP's chainloader options can be configured in c:\boot.ini and then you can use a third party program like wingrub to boot your LINUX partition.
Google on wingrub is the best advice I can give. And make sure your LINUX partitions are really there before trying that.
To reinstall grub, boot into FCx rescue mode (boot: linux rescue), search for and mount the FC installation (chroot /mnt/sysimage) and follow the Grub Manual instructions in Chapter 3.3 “Installing GRUB using grub-install” or in Chapter 3.2 “Installing GRUB natively”.
hi Skunkwaffle,
just boot from the first disk of FC1 nad issue the command "linux rescue" at the boot prompt. it drops you into a shell after mounting the fedora partition in read-write mode. from here issue the command " chroot /mnt/sysimage" which will make the mounted fedora partition your root partition. after that issue the command " grub-istall /dev/hdX " where X is a,b,c etc.. depending on how you connect your harddrive in you r IDE chains. if it doesn't complain about any errors, you will have the grub installed in your mbr. type "exit " twice and the system will reboot giving you the menu at the next boot.
vimal...............
