Download the xpi-files and choose to open them manually from your hard disk. (Menu "File" --> "Open file")
The other way is to allow other sites to install it -- if I do the same I get a message at the top of the screen where I can open preferences and allow a peticular site like addons.mozdev.org. You could of course add the sites by hand. Go to Preferences --> Content --> Warn me when web sites ... --> Click here on "Exceptions" and add all sites that you want to allow to install software.

Even When I allow web sites to install program on my computer, I cannot install extensions. But I can install extensions when I run firefox as root.
I have placed firefox in my home directory and gave write and execute permission to all users. But still extension installation doesn't work for me.
