Can't get a better resolution than 800X600 on debian

Hello all

i am getting a wierd problem with increasing the resolution in my debian.
i editted the XF86config in /etc and added a new resolution in the default depth for my monitor. but it didn't work. It had worked for me in Redhat and slackware.
is there any other way that i can do this?
or is there any other package i have to install

in XF86confi, make sure you have the right VertRefresh and HorizSync settings for your monitor.

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.
